For National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, MAHCP’S Member Engagement Committee has launched for sale a collection featuring original artwork created by local (and famed!) Ojibway artist Jackie Traverse.
Available to MAHCP members to purchase and wear on Sept. 30!

BACKGROUND

In 2024, MAHCP commissioned this stunning painting, titled ‘Protect the Medicine’, to honour Residential School Survivors, represent our members, and demonstrate our commitment to actively work towards culturally safe and equitable health care practices.

From the artist, Jackie Traverse: “In this piece, the men are standing on the outside holding abalone shells and eagle feathers, protecting the women on the inside. The women are also holding abalone shells, and medicine flows from the shells. Women are the medicine. When men and communities protect and honour women, that’s when we have true medicine and healing.”

In tandem with this shirt sale, the Member Engagement Committee has pledged to donate $1,000 to the artist’s charitable organization of choice, Ikwe-Widdjiitiwin Inc, a grassroots organization supporting women and children experiencing gender-based violence. If you would like to support Ikwe as well, the online storefront includes a link to their website where you can donate securely.
