Pause. Reflect. Remember. Renew.

Join the Manitoba Federation of Labour and Safe Workers of Tomorrow in recognizing the National Day of Mourning, a time to remember workers who lost their lives from work.

The National Day of Mourning, observed annually on April 28 in Canada, honors workers who have died, been injured, or suffered illness due to workplace incidents and promotes workplace safety. The Leaders’ Walk in Winnipeg begins at 11:30 a.m. at Union Centre and will make its way to Memorial Park (219 Memorial Blvd). Stay for a 12 pm ceremony at the Workers Memorial and vigil.

Gather at Union Centre, 275 Broadway
Tuesday, April 28, 2026; Walk begins at 11:30 AM

The National Day of Mourning was established in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress to remember and honor those affected by workplace tragedies. It was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991 through an Act of Parliament.

Traditionally on April 28, the Canadian flag flies at half-mast on Parliament Hill and on all federal government buildings. Employers and workers observe Day of Mourning in a variety of ways. Some light candles, lay wreaths, wear commemorative pins, ribbons or black armbands, and pause for a moment of silence.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS) encourages organizations, employees, communities, and individuals to hold or support an event, or to simply observe a moment of silence at 11 am on April 28. Consider sharing or playing their moment of silence video in your workplace to honour those who have died or suffered injury or illness due to a work-related tragedy.

Nominations for Executive Council and Member Advocate positions now open until May 22.
