The Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre, Manitoba’s only Indigenous-lead community health agency, serves the health and well-being needs of Winnipeg’s large and growing Indigenous community and brings together the best of conventional and Indigenous medical practice, knowledge and resources.

MAHCP is proud to represent 50 members working at AHWC, located at Higgins and Main.

“The AHWC team is doing meaningful work to support the Indigenous community,” said Jason Linklater, MAHCP President. “They meet people where they’re at, and the staff develop and deliver extensive programming to advance reconciliation and address some of our city’s most complex social challenges. This is challenging work that demands compassion and patience, and our members show up for their clients with a commitment to caring and to reducing stigma, while honouring each constituent’s intrinsic human value.”

Last week, Honourable Bernadette Smith, the Province of Manitoba’s Minister of Housing, Addictions & Homelessness, announced funding for AHWC to administer the city’s first Indigenous-lead safer consumption site in an effort to mitigate the impact of toxic drug supply and save lives.

Supervised consumption sites typically include a reception area, consumption spaces and post-consumption common areas. Staff are trained to respond to accidental overdoses and other emergencies and can refer to and support patrons in accessing health and social services.
