We recognize this is a challenging and scary time for our members employed by and evacuated from the North. MAHCP appreciates your commitment to care, and we will continue to advocate for your rights and fair compensation throughout this emergency. Updates will be posted when received.

NEW! – IMPORTANT notice for NRHA members (June 16, 2025)

Read these important updates for evacuated MAHCP members employed by the Northern Health Region, including information about HEB Benefits and an employer-approved period of salary continuance.

IMPORTANT notice for NRHA members (June 13, 2025)

MAHCP received a response from the NRHA yesterday to a re-assignment and salary continuance advocacy letter we sent last week on behalf of the Manitoba Council of Health Care Unions.

MAHCP understands that some of our members employed by the NRHA have been redeployed to new work locations as a result of having travelled with evacuated patients. (We also know that some affected Shared Health members working in the North have been re-assigned successfully.) However, we know this has been a stressful and chaotic time, and hasn’t been a straightforward process for many of you.

We encourage you to please contact your LRO as soon as possible if you need guidance or support on any issues, and especially if you are facing difficulties with any of the following:

  • MAHCP has learned that some of you are experiencing unacceptable delays in being redeployed and scheduled to work at alternate locations despite having promptly offered to continue working. Please let your LRO know as soon as possible if you’re experiencing delays in being re-assigned/scheduled at an alternate location of work.
  • If you’re choosing to use vacation during this time, opting to be paid out on your overtime, or you’ve requested an unpaid leave, the NRHA states these requests will continue to be approved. Please let your LRO know as soon as possible if you’re experiencing any difficulties accessing these options.

Thank you for your commitment to Manitobans’ care, and we will continue advocating for you as you face this challenge.

NRHA Frequently asked questions for members – added June 9, 2025

Due to the current wildfires spanning across Northern Manitoba, the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) has declared a region-wide emergency under Article 16 of the MAHCP Collective Agreement, effective immediately.

What this means for you:

Under Article 16.01(a), in the event of an emergency or disaster, employees are required to perform duties as assigned by the Employer, even if those duties fall outside their usual scope of work or contradict other provisions of the agreement. Compensation for any unusual working conditions will be addressed through discussion between the Employer and MAHCP and, if needed, through the grievance process. Overtime provisions under Article 14 continue to apply.

Key reminders:

  • Expect rapidly changing needs and plans.
The situation is fluid, and your flexibility is appreciated.

  • Comply with direction from and perform duties as assigned by your manager.
The principle of ‘work now, grieve later’ applies during emergency declarations.

  • Track everything.
Carefully log your hours of work, work locations, duties performed, and especially any overtime. This documentation will be critical for follow-up discussions and any grievance processes.

  • Stay connected.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact your Labour Relations Officer (LRO). Due to the high volume of inquiries at this time, we ask for your patience as we work to support all members as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
