Message from MAHCP President Jason Linklater
As of today, more than 21,000 Manitobans have now been forced to flee residences in the North, including MAHCP members working and living in Flin Flon, Lynn Lake, Cranberry-Portage, Mathias Colomb First Nation, Cross Lake, Creighton, Denare Beach, and many more. There are 29 fires actively burning in the North and 27 communities under mandatory evacuation order.
This is an evolving emergency and we understand that leaving everything behind is frightening and traumatic. Your imminent safety matters most.
Please know that MAHCP is working with employers to mitigate the impact of displacement by advocating for salary continuance.
Last week, I sent a request on behalf of the Manitoba Council of Health Care Unions (MCHCU), urging our province’s health-care employers to do the right thing for wildfire-affected employees by continuing to pay you while you’re facing this disaster. We will keep you posted on the outcome of this request.
I want to express our sincere gratitude to our members in the North who stepped up to care for and evacuate patients and residents in spite of your own evacuation orders and risks. We cannot thank you enough for your commitment to helping those who cannot help themselves.
I also want to acknowledge our MAHCP members in Prairie Mountain Health, Winnipeg, and Southern Health-Santé Sud who received evacuated patients and are now providing uninterrupted care in other regions of the province.
We encourage you all to take care of yourselves and your loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with you. If you have immediate questions or needs, please do not hesitate to contact your MAHCP Labour Relations Officer.
In solidarity,
Jason
